Every morning on my way to university, I cycled past a half-built pedestrian bridge. It had been standing there, surrounded by scaffolding and silence, for nearly two years. Rumours circulated — funding delays, design flaws, disputes between contractors. One day, a handwritten sign appeared on the barrier: “Will this bridge ever be finished?” It was a question that seemed to speak for the whole neighbourhood, and it planted something in my mind that I couldn’t shake. I wasn’t just curious about why the project had stalled; I was curious about the entire system that could let a piece of vital infrastructure sit incomplete while people detoured an extra mile every day.
That bridge became my accidental case study. I started reading about construction project management, risk allocation, procurement methods, and the delicate balance between cost, time, and quality. Construction engineering, I realised, isn’t just about concrete and steel. It’s about managing uncertainty, coordinating dozens of stakeholders, and making decisions under pressure — knowing that mistakes can cost millions and delay projects for years. The more I learned, the more I wanted to understand why some projects succeed while others become those sad, half-finished landmarks that communities learn to ignore.
When it came time to choose my dissertation, I knew I wanted to explore something around project delays and mitigation strategies. But the topic was too big — I needed to drill down into something specific. I spent a rainy Sunday looking through construction engineering dissertation topics to see what other students had already investigated. For the first time, the dissertation felt less like a requirement and more like a genuine investigation — one that could actually help project managers avoid the kind of stagnation I’d witnessed on my daily commute.

Maybe it’s a pothole that never gets fixed, a building that went up suspiciously fast, or a bridge that, like mine, still hasn’t been finished. The best research questions come from the built world around you. Then look at what other students have already explored, and use that to shape your own curiosity into something worth building.
