I still remember the summer when the temperature in my hometown hit a record high — not just for a day, but for an entire week. Trains stopped running. Roads buckled. People were told to stay indoors. It was the kind of heat you couldn’t escape, even at night. I wasn’t a climate scientist; I was just a student lying awake in a stifling room, scrolling through news alerts that felt increasingly apocalyptic. That summer planted a question in my mind that I couldn’t shake: what happens to communities that weren’t built for this kind of weather? And what can we actually do about it?
Until then, climate change had always felt like a distant, abstract problem. Something discussed at international summits with graphs and jargon that felt disconnected from daily life. But after living through those punishing weeks, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I started paying attention to how different neighbourhoods coped — or didn’t. The wealthier areas had air conditioning and backup generators. The poorer ones had fans and open windows. The injustice of it made me angry, and anger, it turns out, is a powerful motivator for research.
Once I decided to explore climate change for my dissertation, I needed to turn that anger into something structured. The topic was too big — I couldn’t possibly tackle everything. So I began looking for examples of what other students had already investigated. Browsing through collections of real climate change dissertation topics gave me a clearer sense of what a manageable project looked like. Some examined the effectiveness of carbon pricing policies, others explored how coastal communities were planning for sea‑level rise, and a few investigated the role of urban green spaces in reducing heat island effects. With that direction, I sharpened my focus. I decided to compare two neighbourhoods in the same city — one affluent, one low‑income — and examine how their built environments influenced indoor temperatures during heatwaves. I combined meteorological data with interviews, and my supervisor helped me ground the work in environmental justice theory. The project didn’t feel like a box to tick anymore. It felt urgent and personal, like I was actually contributing something useful.
If you’re overwhelmed by the scale of climate change and don’t know where to start, don’t try to save the whole planet in one dissertation. Start with something you’ve witnessed or felt yourself — a flooded street, a failed crop, a protest you attended. Then go look at what other students have already explored, and use those examples to shape your own question. The best research comes from a place of genuine concern, and there’s no shortage of that when it comes to our warming world.
